DISH Network ViP622 DVR Features You'll Want Your MPEG-4 DISH Network's ViP622 satellite receiver/digital video recorder (DVR) has more features than any product of its kind, including the ability to receive and record not only standard MPEG-2 broadcasts; but also MPEG-4 high definition broadcasts. So what? So MPEG-4 AVC is a new compression standard that allows more than twice as much HD video into the same bandwidth as current MPEG-2 technology. This means that with MPEG-4, which isn't compatible with older receivers, DISH can start offering local HD channels via satellite, currently only the four main local HD channels--ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC--to 13 major metropolitan areas; but with plans for 50 cities by the end of 2006. Until local HD broadcasts come to your town via satellite, the ViP622 has an ATSC tuner built in to receive them over the air (antenna required, not included). One, Two, Three At Once This is the first DVR on the market able to leap tall buildings in a single bound--no wait, that's Superman. Take 2: the first DVR able to record three live TV programs, HD or SD, simultaneously. Two can be satellite broadcasts, while the third must come over the air. The ViP622 records everything you watch all the time, like all DVRs, so you can always rewind to catch something you missed. If you pause a program, it stays frozen for up to one hour; while the show in progress keeps recording for viewing later. Let's say you're recording three live programs; if you want to watch something at the same time, is has to be one of those shows, right? Wrong. With the ViP622, you could watch a fourth HD or SD program that was already on the hard drive without disturbing the three in-progress recordings. A DISH Network receiver/hard drive recorder puts you in charge of how and when you watch TV. Stately Homes No Problem For Dual Mode Only DISH Network offers what they call a dual mode receiver/DVR that can output to two TVs. In addition to the primary HD output (TV1), the ViP622 can send an SD signal (TV2) to another TV in a different room. This feature saves you from buying or renting another satellite receiver for your second TV. TV2 allows a viewer on the secondary television to watch any of the recorded shows on the ViP622's hard disk (HD programs are downconverted to SD for display on TV2). In dual mode, the ViP622's three tuners are split between the two TVs. TV1 gets the over-the-air (OTA) and one satellite tuner; while TV2 gets the second satellite tuner, which means you can't watch live OTA programs on TV2. But the secondary television has its own favorite-channel lists, search histories, and aspect-ratio controls from TV1; and a user on TV2 can access most of the menu settings, except for closed captions, without disturbing TV1. The ViP622 comes with two remote controls: a v5.3 infrared (IR) remote for TV1 identified by a green color tag at the bottom, and a v6.3 IR/UHF/UHF Pro radio frequency (RF) for TV2 identified by a blue color tag at the bottom. The RF remote can control the ViP622 from up to 200 feet away, in case you have a really big house. Button Up Your PocketDISH This receiver/DVR has all the connections you'll need for today's HDTVs; and unlike many other cable box outputs, they're all active all the time. Each output is also simultaneous; for example, you can hook up two HDTVs, one via component video and the other via HDMI, simultaneously. For outputs, TV1 gets HDMI, component-video, S-Video, composite-video, analog stereo, and optical digital audio. There's an additional composite-video output with stereo audio, as well as a screw-type RF output, both of which send separate A/V signals to TV2 when using dual mode. The back panel also has two satellite inputs, an OTA antenna input, a jack to connect the RF antenna for TV2's remote, a telephone jack for ordering pay-per-view and for on-screen caller ID when the phone rings, and USB and Ethernet ports reserved for future use. The front panel also has a USB connection, for connecting any of PocketDISH's portable digital media players/recorders--the 7" AV700E, 4" AV500E, and 2.2" AV402E (no recorder)--to transfer TV programs stored on the ViP622's HDD. DISH Up The HD Entertainment DishHD programming packages (available only with the ViP622 receiver/DVR and ViP211 receiver) offer the most high definition content available today--over 1,700 hours per week--from the nation's top programmers.
